Bronny James suffers cardiac arrest during USC basketball practice

Bronny James cardiac arrest

Bronny James, the son of NBA star LeBron James, suffered a cardiac arrest during a basketball workout at the University of Southern California (USC) on Monday. He was rushed to the hospital via ambulance and is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. Bronny James is one of the headliners in USC’s elite 2023 signing class and is a four-star, ranked as the 27th-best player nationally per 247Sports.

Bronny James is the eldest child of professional basketball player LeBron James. He is an American college basketball player for the USC Trojans of the Pac-12 Conference. A consensus four-star recruit, he was named a McDonald’s All-American as a senior in high school in 2023

Cardiac arrest happens when electrical abnormalities force the heart to cease beating suddenly. It may be fatal if not immediately treated, but it can be reversed by CPR and shocks from a defibrillator, according to the American Heart Association. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals in the United States each year.

The event happened on Monday morning, with a 911 call being placed about 9:30 a.m. PT. According to TMZ, Bronny James was unconscious when the ambulance arrived, but he is now in stable condition and no longer in the intensive care unit, according to a statement provided to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family, and we will update the media when there is more information,” the statement stated. “LeBron and Savannah would like to publicly express their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to their athletes’ safety.”

The medical staff at USC has recently dealt with a similar event. During a summer session last July, USC freshman forward Vince Iwuchukwu experienced a heart arrest. Iwuchukwu said in a video posted to Twitter earlier this year that he felt dizzy during a practice water break and suddenly fainted.

According to USC, athletic trainers Jon Yonamine, Erin Tillman, and Lauren Crawford performed CPR on him and shocked him back to life. Iwuchukwu recovered and made his NBA debut in January, more than six months later.

In January, head coach Andy Enfield lauded the training staff.

“They really do an amazing job, not only keeping our players healthy, but when something happens, they do therapy, and when something serious happens, like in Vince’s case, they’re ready to respond immediately.”

Damar Hamlin of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills experienced a heart arrest during a “Monday Night Football” game last year and was hospitalized for more than a week.

“Prayers to Bronny & The James Family as well,” Hamlin tweeted on Tuesday. “I’m here for you guys, just as you’ve been for me throughout this entire process.”
